2010 Winter Olympics /Vincent Jay wins men’s biathlon sprint for France
WHISTLER, British Columbia – Vincent Jay of France combined superb shooting and a little bit of luck yesterday to secure a gold medal on his Olympic debut, winning the men's 10-kilometer sprint at the Vancouver Games.
With a flurry of wet snow mixed with rain making conditions difficult for most of the pre-race favorites, Jay shot clean and took advantage of an early start number to finish in 24 minutes, 7.8 seconds. Emil Hegle Svendsen of Norway was 12.2 seconds back to take silver. Jakov Fak of Croatia took bronze, finishing another 1.8 seconds behind. The 24-year-old Jay was the second surprise winner in two days at the biathlon venue, after Anastazia Kuzmina of Slovakia won the women's sprint on Saturday.
