Brett Gardner to lead off for Yankees, Derek Jeter will hit second
The New York Yankees will bat left fielder Brett Gardner at leadoff on opening day, the YES Network reports.
The move will bump shortstop Derek Jeter from the leadoff role to the No. 2 hole.
The possible switch has been a hot topic in Yankees’ camp all spring, with manager Joe Girardi hinting several times that a change could be in the works.
The move will allow New York to take advantage of Gardner’s speed and on-base percentage. Gardner stole 47 bases last season and led the Yankees with a .383 on-base percentage.
Conversely, Jeter struggled through the worst offensive season of his career in 2010. His batting average dipped from .334 in 2009 to .370, and his on-base percentage fell from .406 to .340.
