Canadians fall in final match at world volleyball showdown
Canada wrapped up the FIVB world women’s volleyball championship on a losing note Wednesday, falling to the Dominican Republic in its final round-robin match.
The 25-21, 26-28, 11-25, 20-25 loss gave the Canadians a 0-5 record in the 24-country event and sixth-place in the six-team D Pool.
The Canadians, ranked 24th in the world, held a pair of set points in the second set, but couldn’t put the Dominicans away to go up 2-0 in the match.
“We had a chance to take a 2-0 lead but didn’t do it,” said Canadian head coach Arnd Ludwig. “I’m proud of my players; they improved a lot during this tournament.”
Canada nearly faltered in the opening set, after squandering a 16-13 lead. But the 11th-ranked Dominicans could only pull even at 16-16, with the Canadians able to put them away at 25-21.
“We started well,” said Canadian team captain Tammy Mahon of Holland, Man. “It was the same as yesterday (a five-set loss to Turkey). We didn’t react well. This tournament was a great experience for us.”
Tiffany Dodds of Lucky Lake, Sask., led the way for the Canadians with 14 points, while Calgary’s Tasha Holness and Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., each chipped in with 12 points.
