Fifa ask Football Association to ‘urgently’ supply evidence of corruption
Exclusive: Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke has written to the Football Association asking for “urgent” assistance following allegations that six Fifa executive committee members were involved in bribery of “unethical” behaviour during the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
Valcke’s letter, addressed to FA Chairman David Bernstein and seen by The Telegraph, asks the FA to forward a copy of Lord Triesman’s evidence – presented to the Culture Media and Sport Committee yesterday – as well as any documents backing up his claims that four executive committee members made improper requests for financial assistance or favours during the England 2018 bid.
Valcke writes: “There is no need to express our extreme concern regarding the latest allegations questioning the integrity of some Fifa executive committee members made recently by Lord David Triesman … here, dear Chairman, we need your help.
“For us to be in a position to examine the situation thoroughly, and with clear sightedness, we kindly solicit you to remit us a complete report [from] Lord Triesman [together with] any or all documentary evidence at his disposal.
“We wish to underline the utmost urgency and extreme sensitivity of the matter.”
Valcke has sent a similar letter to the Sunday Times, which provided the CMS committee with allegations that two executive committee members accepted bribes of $1.5 million from the Qatar 2022 bid. Qatari authorities have denied the allegations.
