Four medals for SA in Stockholm
The first day of the final leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup took place in Stockholm on Saturday and the South African swimming team is flying high with two golds, a silver and a bronze medal.
Roland Schoeman once again took the gold in the 50m breaststroke and the 50m butterfly.
Schoeman claimed the 50m breaststroke title in a time of 26.34 ahead of Sweden’s Jakob Dorch in 27.10 and Russia’s Stanislav Lakhtyukov in 27.12.
In the 50m butterfly, Schoeman raced to a golden 22.49 ahead of world record holder Steffen Deibler who ended in 22.83. The bronze medal went to Sweden’s Lars Frolander in 23.27.
Neil Versfeld swam to the silver medal in the 200m breaststroke. Versfeld was in the lead until the 150m mark when Anton Lobanov’s fast turns took him ahead of Versfeld to touch the wall in 2:06.25. Versfeld followed a close second in 2:07.18 with Japan’s Daiya Seto in third (2:07.52).
It was the bronze medal for Darian Townsend in the 100m individual medley. Townsend ended in 53.13 behind Russia’s Sergey Fesikov in 52.81 and Brazil’s Thiago Pereira in 52.93.
The last leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup in Stockholm concludes on Sunday, following which the team returns back home.
