Like a man who finally invents the perfect horse-drawn train just as the first internal combustion engine comes sparking into life, the England cricket team have at last become the No 1 ranked Test Match nation, going 3-0 up in their series against India just as cricket’s most powerful nation appears to have given up on this format altogether. Excellent seam bowling combined with Alastair Cook’s 294 gave the hosts victory by an innings and 242 runs at Edgbaston, abject humiliation for the incumbent world No 1s. “There’s no way our goal will be just trying to maintain that status. We’ve got to have something more exciting than that,” declared team director Andy Flower.
