Italian luger Wilfried Huber hopes to make Olympic history in 2010
Wilfried Huber’s first Olympic Games were in Calgary in 1988.After sliding in every Games since then, the Italian luger aims to close his career in Canada in 2010 and make Olympic history while doing so. Huber could be the first athlete to participate seven Winter Olympics at the Games in Vancouver and Whistler, B.C., starting Feb. 12. But he has to qualify for the Italian Olympic team to stake that claim. The 39-year-old from South Tyrol races Saturday in the season-opening World Cup at Canada Olympic Park, where he made his Olympic debut. "The World Cup you can compete only five men and for the Olympics only three men," Huber explained Wednesday after a training run at COP.
We must see over the World Cup during the season. Maybe I can get in the first three places and go to Vancouver. It’s hard. I think I have a chance, but it’s so close. Every race is very important. The first stop on the Viessman World Cup circuit opens Friday with the team event and doubles. The latter features Calgary brothers and Olympic veterans Chris and Mike Moffatt, as well as the young team of Tristan Walker and Justin Smith, who are also from Calgary.
