Tressel served as coach of the Buckeyes since 2001, but he leaves amid scandal. Six players were suspended for selling or trading jerseys and other memorabilia, and it was later revealed that Tressel knew of the events but did not report them. He was suspended for two games but later requested it be increased to five games, to match the penalties of his players.

Tressel led the Buckeyes to a national title in 2002, as well as seven Big Ten titles. His 10-year record at Ohio State is 106-22.

The report indicates that assistant Luke Fickell will serve as interim coach.
