Matt Holliday Goes On Disabled List With Quad Strain
After continuing to feel a nagging pain in his left quad, Matt Holliday was scratched from his start on Tuesday. The St. Louis Cardinals slugger underwent an MRI on Wednesday, and whatever they found, it wasn’t good. From St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Derrick Goold:
Holliday and McClellan will go on DL tomorrow, per Mozeliak. Lynn starts tomorrow.
Rough day for the Cardinals, as they lose a middle-of-the-order presence and a starting pitcher. The good news, if you could call it that, is that both Jon Jay and Allen Craig have been about as productive as Holliday in their 100+ plate appearances. While they aren’t necessarily likely to maintain their .900 OPS’s, they’re both capable outfielders who can hold their own in a starting lineup.
The quad has bothered Holliday since May 19th, and while he played on it for a couple of weeks, the organization prefers to have him rest and prepare for the playoff push.
