Penn volleyball squad defeats Dartmouth in five sets Friday night
Sophomore Lauren Martin came through for the Penn Quakers volleyball team Friday night with 19 kills. The Quakers also played strong defense as a team and improved to 7-9 overall and 3-1 in the Ivy League with a 21-25, 25-16, 25-19, 22-25, 15-8 Ivy League victory over Dartmouth at the Palestra in Philadelphia.
Penn is the defending Ivy League volleyball champions.
The Quakers totaled 92 digs Friday night and held the Big Green to a .135 hitting percentage. They also forced Darmouth into 30 attack errors.
“It was a great match,” Penn coach Kerry Carr said following the match on the Penn Athletics’ website. “We faced a five-set match. Dartmouth had won the fourth set and we didn’t get scared, we didn’t get nervous. We came out really aggressive and very driven to finish the fifth set. Instead of focusing on our errors, we focuse on our strengths.”
Carr became the all-time leader in volleyball coaching victories at Penn Friday night. She won her 204th match which breaks the record of 203 set by Joe Sagula who coached at Penn from 1981 to 1989. Carr has guided the Quakers to four Ivy League volleyball titles and is in her 13th year at Penn.
Senior Madison Wojciechowski totaled a team-high 25 digs Friday night for the Quakers.
The Quakers face Harvard at the Palestra Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. Eastern Time. Harvard is 5-12 overall and 2-3 in league play.
