Serena Williams Wins Wimbledon 2011 Comeback in Tears
Serena Williams has won her first Wimbledon match this year. Williams came to Wimbledon 2011 after being laid off for almost a year due to a freak injury on her foot right after winning the title last year. It has been a struggle for Serena to be fit again for tennis. After recovering from the foot injury, she was downed by blood clots in her lungs that left her hospitalized for quite some time. She described her battle against blood clots on her lungs as like being on her death bed. And just as she struggled to come back to Wimbledon, Serena also struggled in her first match against Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. She broke down in tears after the match.
It has been an emotional and physical roller coaster for Serena Williams, and her first round victory was more than that. Understandably, she was emotional after her win.
“I usually don’t cry, I don’t understand it. It’s been so hard, I never dreamt I’d be here,” said Williams when interviewed after her win. “I just wanted to win at least one match here and since I’m not playing doubles it was a really big win for me. It’s been so hard and has been a disaster year….. To be able to come back at Wimbledon is pretty awesome, I didn’t expect to play or do anything. I’m just excited.”
Aravane Rezai, seeded 61st the world this year, won the first two games of the match against the obviously nervous Serena. But the defending champion eventually won the first set by winning the remaining games. The second set, meanwhile, saw the French player play more aggressively to take the set. But Serena Williams was determined to make a successful comeback at Wimbledon, and dominated the final set.
