Texas Rangers’ bankrputcy could help New York Mets’ hunt for Roy Oswalt
A judge said Tuesday that the Texas Rangers will have to amend the team's bankruptcy plan, dealing a blow to a Bud Selig-backed proposal to sell the franchise to a group led by Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan. However, the scuttled Rangers' sale could bolster the Mets' chances of landing Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt before the July 31 trading deadline, should they decide to pursue the pitcher.

The ruling by U.S. Bankruptcy Judge D. Michael Lynn in Fort Worth also noted that Major League Baseball had loaned the Rangers more than $20 million to cover cash flow shortfalls for the remainder of the season – a revelation that has infuriated other MLB clubs. A baseball source said that while other teams knew the Rangers were receiving financial assistance from MLB's central fund, they didn't know the extent of that support.
